Peatland Education and Action for Kids in Leyte: Celebrating World Wetlands Day 2023 (PEAK 2023)
Thursday, February 2, 2023
World Wetlands Day is celebrated globally every year in recognition of the urgent need to promote the conservation and restoration of wetlands. About half of the world’s wetlands are peatlands, which are critical for preventing and mitigating the effects of climate change, preserving biodiversity, and minimizing floods. The event aims to teach the children of community members that live on Leyte Sab-a Peatland, about peatland ecosystems through a series of hands-on learning activities. The event aims to: 1. help increase the awareness of the youth and relevant community members, including the teachers and parents, on the importance of peatlands, particularly the Leyte Sab-a Basin by promoting the knowledge products of the Leyte Sab-a Restoration Initiative; 2. mobilize community support for the provincial ordinance and house bill for Peatland Conservation; and 3. instill a sense of responsibility for the environment among community members, especially the youth, and inspire them to take action – now and in the future – to contribute to the conservation and restoration of the peatlands.
