Discover the Gediz Delta: The Story of Wetland Ecosystems and Life
Sunday, February 2, 2025
The Gediz Delta, spanning 26,165 hectares, stands as a pivotal biodiversity hotspot within the Mediterranean Basin, boasting a remarkable array of flora and fauna. Notably, it hosts a breeding ground for 8,000 to 20,000 pairs of greater flamingos, representing more than 10 percent of the global population of the species. Additionally, species such as the Dalmatian pelican, Mediterranean monk seal, and loggerhead turtle further increase the ecological importance of the site. Designated as one of Turkey's 14 Ramsar Sites, the Gediz Delta holds national conservation statuses as a natural protected area, wildlife development area, and wetland protection area. Because of its proximity to urban areas, the Gediz Delta faces significant threats from urbanization. To mitigate these risks, it is crucial for residents—particularly those in Izmir—to become informed about the Gediz Delta Wetland Ecosystem and its rich biodiversity. Fostering engagement through regular visitation to the delta is essential in building local stewardship and long-term conservation awareness. This year, we aim to bring together urban and rural communities in the Gediz Delta to raise awareness about the importance of wetlands, the threats they face, conservation efforts, as well as the diverse habitats and rich biodiversity of the Gediz Delta. These two groups will develop a shared understanding and sense of stewardship, crucial for ecosystem health and sustainable conservation. On February 2nd, World Wetlands Day, we will gather at the Gediz Delta Visitor Center, managed by the Izmir Branch of Nature Conservation and National Parks. Following a presentation in the center's hall, we will do a birdwatching event through the middle part of the Gediz Delta. The presentation will address the important role of global wetlands with a specific focus on the Gediz Delta. During the birdwatching event, participants will explore the Doga's monitoring and restoration efforts in the Gediz Delta, highlighting it as a model conservation area. The participants will get to know bird species closely through a bird-watching activity with Doga's equipment and expertise.
