Pallikaranai Wetland Marsh the Pride of Chennai

Nazareth College of Arts and Science, Department of Social Work and United Nations Academic Charter commemorated World Wetlands Day at the Pallikaranai Wetland March in Chennai Tamilnadu. Located in suburban Chennai, the Pallikaranai marsh is among the last remaining natural wetlands of the city. The marsh, despite being reduced to one-tenth of its original size is one of the most diverse natural habitats in the country. It supports 349 species of flora and fauna including 133 species of birds. The marsh supports over 40,000 birds at a time during the migratory season and over 5000 birds during the non-migratory season. The students Tryphosa, Kingsley, Jubin, Sajana and Aravind interacted with the public to spread awareness on the importance of conserving Wetlands. The event was spearheaded by the Principal and Head Department of Social work and supported by Mr.Henry Maris. They have created videos in 3 languages English, Tamil and Malayalam.
