Wetlands for Our Common Future
The University of Sulaimani (UoS) is hosting a symposium titled "Wetlands for Our Common Future" on February 2, 2025, at 11:00 AM in Congress Hall, marking the International Day of Wetlands. This event highlights the critical role wetlands play in supporting ecosystems, biodiversity, and sustainable water management. It will spotlight UoS's Constructed Wetland Project—a collaborative initiative between the College of Engineering, the College of Environmental Sciences, and the World Food Programme (WFP)—as a model for ecological and community resilience.
The program will feature a documentary screening showcasing the project's vision and achievements, expert presentations on nature-based solutions using phyto-technology, and a panel discussion involving prominent stakeholders. Discussions will address the integration of wetland technologies into water strategies, challenges, and success stories, as well as global and local impacts of wetland initiatives. A networking session will conclude the event, fostering connections among participants.
Targeted at decision-makers, environmental experts, government representatives, academia, farmers, and NGOs, this symposium aims to enhance awareness, promote knowledge exchange, develop policy recommendations, and strengthen partnerships for advancing wetland conservation efforts in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) and beyond.
